GROUP DESCRIPTION

GROUP OBJECTIVES

RESEARCH GROUP MEMBERS

Group Leader

Ignacio (Nacho) Maeso

I am aAssociate Professor at the Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics Department at the University of Barcelona. My research interests focus on the early stages of the origin of molecular novelties and how biological systems establish new interactions with other systems for the first time. I also have a keen interest on the evolution of gene regulation in animals.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Marta Portela

I am interested in the evolution of gene regulation, gene regulatory networks and transcription factors. I use functional genomics techniques and bioinformatic analyses to understand how new elements are incorporated into regulatory networks.

PhD Student (co-supervised with Manuel Irimia)

Manuel Fernández-Moreno

Fascinated by the evolutionary role of transposons and convergent evolution. Pursuing a PhD in transposon biology, unravelling how retroviral genes have been repurposed for neuroplasticity through a combination of two model organisms and in silico approaches.
